LAPTOP COMPUTER AS MUSICAL NOISE INSTRUMENT: It started as a synthesizer that I made called "Electric Placenta". It's also a play on a Hendrix release that some of you might recognize. Electric PlacentaLand is loud and intense. Its complex sonic textures and colors change, evolve and don't let you go. It's a blending of sound deconstruction and aural rebirth. You'll hear different things each time you listen.

The Electric Placenta synthesizer is a sound generator and a sample destroyer at the same time. It can tear apart samples and combine them with generated sounds in a barely controllable and sometimes rhythmic way. It's always doing something, making hundreds or even thousands of adjustments every minute. This happens whether you want it to or not... on purpose!

It's a synth that you pretty much have to 'deal with' instead of just play. It's a pretty intense experience that's constantly changing and never repeating.

The samples I used came from plundering my old recordings some of which go back to the mid-1980's. They include Roland TR-707 and 606 beats, guitar mistakes, fragments of my 4-track songs, field recordings, sound experiments and anything else that I thought sounded interesting.

Michael Oster is an artist of extremes. From beautiful and detailed nature recordings to experimental sonic butchery and audio destruction, his releases cover a lot of ground. He has an extensive background in audio engineering and sound design with a career that spans over 20 years. Currently, his experimental releases involve the use of his custom designed synthesizers and audio manipulators which he creates in Native Instruments Reaktor software. His base of operations is his laptop studio called F7 Sound and Vision. He also is the force behind the "Difficult Listening Channel" podcast which features an ever-evolving mashup of original sonic material.
